The Skokie Shops are CTA's heavy maintenance facility for the entire fleet of railcars on the "L" rapid transit system. All major repairs and overhauls are done at the Skokie facility. Since 1926, it's been located along the CTA Yellow Line (formerly Skokie Swift). The current 236,700-square-foot complex is primarily the result of late-1990s renovations that added an administrative building and state-of-the-art new facilities for inspection, painting, rewiring, rebuilding and more.

Visitor Experience

Visitors will be taken from Howard station to the shop aboard a vintage train from CTA's Heritage Fleet. Participants will tour the shop, seeing how different trades such an carpenters, electricians, machinists and others maintain and overhaul CTA's railcars to keep them in top shape. Age 10+ only, reservations required.
