Nicky's of Beverly is an elevated fast-casual restaurant. It spent 23 years in a cramped storefront before opening its location at 105th and Western, which won a 2021 ALA Design Merit Award. Owner Paul Kostopanagiotu kept the original brick building that was situated diagonally on the lot and added shipping containers to expand its size to 2,000 square feet. He worked with architect Joe Carroll of CMMR, LLC to design an open format that invites the outdoors in and vice versa. They selected oversized steel cubes painted in bright teal, some stacked two stories high, to create a dining area with an 18-foot ceiling and large windows to flood the interior with sunlight. Multiple openings, including an overhead door facing the street, beckon people into the connected spaces. Interior walls are covered in colorful murals by local artists, some depicting neighborhood landmarks. The shipping containers are positioned for maximum visibility from the street, with landscaped beds and outdoor seating in front. A walled patio oasis on the south side of the building where local musicians often play is filled with plants, a pergola, twinkling lights, a fire pit and dining tables.
Visitors are welcome to walk throughout the restaurant, including the dining areas and the patio, at their leisure. There will be music on the patio both days. Visitors are also able to visit the Nicky's garage, which is the headquarters for a community arts organization called the Beverly Area Arts Alliance. The Alliance should have an art exhibit open both days.
