Jens Jensen, 1908

This calming space was the largest greenhouse in the world upon its completion. Landscape architect Jens Jensen designed it to emulate Midwestern haystacks. It remains a masterpiece of "landscape art under glass" with scenic interior vistas comprising meandering pathways, lagoons and exotic plants--planted not in pots, but directly into the ground. Today the conservatory inspires and educates visitors about the power of nature through innovative programs and special events.

Visitor Experience

Explore the conservatory, then go out back to the Cabbage Patch, a special installation designed by Danish artists Gamborg/Magnussen. Conservatory volunteers will share information about the project and help visitors harvest a cabbage to take home, if you wish.
