Chicago Lakeside Development
8555 S. Green Bay Ave.
On Chicago's lakefront, a massive 600-acre site was once home to the U.S. Steel South Works manufacturing plant. Now, the site's developers aim to transform it into an innovative community in which to live, work and play—with next-generation infrastructure for energy, water, waste management and communications. The site's master plan created by SOM includes: 20 million square feet of retail; 15,000 new residential dwelling units; and 130 acres of open space, parks and bike paths. Initial development plans focus on a retail center anchored by a grocery store and residential housing units. Steelworkers Park, Lakeside's first public park, is now open and accessible from the new South Lake Shore Drive at 87th St.
