Explore South Shore: Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative

The recently opened Stony Island Arts Bank in South Shore is among artist Theaster Gates' latest restoration projects and it proved to be a popular site during OHC 2015. What else has Theaster been working on in the past few years?

The Chicago Architecture Center hosted a program in 2014 to discuss the Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative, another important south side project aimed at transforming the former Dante Harper housing project into a mixed-income community and a place for arts creation, performance, education and display. The effort was a collaboration between Chicago Housing Authority, Brinshore Development, Theaster Gates and his Rebuild Foundation and Landon Bone Baker Architects.

The artist community opened last fall, and was an OHC site in 2014. Check out this behind-the-scenes video, which follows the architects and the developer during the Dorchester restoration. While not an OHC site in 2015, the Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative project is another example of finding renewed value in Chicago neighborhood places and spaces.

The Chicago Architecture Center’s partnership with the South Shore community is sponsored by Allstate Insurance Company.
