The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1925 and dedicated to the Dormition ("Falling Asleep") of the Mother of God. The original wooden structure was replaced by the current edifice in 1937. Built in a Byzantine-Romanesque style, its copper-patina dome, visible from the Eisenhower Expressway, invites visitors to explore the ecclesiastical treasures inside.
The iconography is a mixture of the Western and Eastern Christian traditions. The classical Byzantine stained glass windows from the 1950s are some of the finest in the Western Hemisphere. The iconostasis ("icon screen"), redone in the 1990s, serves as the focal point of worship. The lower level St. Katherine Chapel has additional icons including several from the 1925 church.
A ten minute tour will be available to those interested; others may choose to self-explore the Church. Guided tour to begin in the narthex of the church. Photography is welcome, but eating and drinking is prohibited.
