Description
German immigrant Herman Joseph Berghoff opened Chicago’s original Berghoff Cafe in 1898. The restaurant’s adjoining storefronts on W. Adams St. were among the first to be rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1871. They evoke the style of buildings that existed in the Loop prior to the fire. The 27 W. Adams facade is made of cast iron—one of only two such structures remaining in the city. Among the unique rooms in the building is a public hall on the top floor where, allegedly, protesters gathered before the 1886 Haymarket Affair. Another claim to fame is Berghoff’s celebrated history of beer brewing. They proudly hold Chicago's liquor license number one.
